Tekna of Kalamazoo Receives State Award for Outstanding Safety & Health Record

August 20, 2009 - Tekna, Inc. of Kalamazoo received the Gold Award from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) for an outstanding safety and health record. The MIOSHA program is part of the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG).

The MIOSHA Consultation Education and Training (CET) Division recognizes the safety and health achievements of Michigan employers and employees through CET Awards, which are based on excellent safety and health performance. The CET Gold Award recognizes an outstanding safety record of 100,000 - 2,000,000 continuous hours worked without days away from work, based on the employer's size and type of business.

Besides going more than a year without a lost-time accident, the company has completed the following criteria to receive the Gold Award: 
  • Developed and implemented a comprehensive safety and health management system; 
  • Established a safety and health committee, with both employee and management participation; 
  • Developed an employee training system, with an emphasis on how to do the work in a safe and healthful manner; and 
  • Worked diligently to change their workplace culture to reflect the importance of worker safety.


CET Senior Safety Consultant Micshall Patrick performed a hazard survey on site, which is a part of the award process. This survey allowed them an opportunity to walk through the facility with a MIOSHA representative and correct any problem areas that were noted. She also evaluated their safety and health system, which is integrated into their established technical instructions.

"Companies that establish an integrated safety and health program reap the benefits of significantly reducing their injury and illness rates," said MIOSHA Director Doug Kalinowski. "Reducing these rates not only protects employees-it has a healthy impact on a company's bottom line."

"Our business revolves around providing exceptional service, products and professional expertise beyond the expectations of our customers," said Kris Eager, President of Tekna. "A key component in achieving that goal begins with our employees, their work environment, and their overall well being. Meeting and surpassing MIOSHA standards on a voluntary basis reflects our continued commitment to excellence in every part of our business."

Tekna has 33 workers and is a full service design and engineering firm primarily involved with product development in medical device sector. Tekna fills client product design needs, from conceptual design to engineering and final product assembly and distribution.
