Agency: Licensing and Regulatory Affairs

August 24, 2010 - Five Comau Inc. facilities received CET Silver Awards today from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) for outstanding safety and health records. The facilities encompass Comau's Novi campus, Southfield campus, and Field Service Division. The MIOSHA program is part of the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG).

This was a record for MIOSHA - never before has MIOSHA presented five such awards to a single company at one time. MIOSHA Director Doug Kalinowski presented the awards to representatives of all five facilities in ceremonies at the Novi Campus and the Southfield Campus.

"It is a distinct honor to recognize all five Comau facilities for their dedication to create a safe and healthy work environment," said DELEG Deputy Director & Chief of Staff Susan R. Corbin. "Each Comau facility is to be congratulated for their outstanding efforts to protect their workers - while meeting the challenge of being economically competitive in today's global marketplace."

The MIOSHA Consultation Education and Training (CET) Division recognizes the safety and health achievements of Michigan employers and employees through CET Awards, which are based on excellent safety and health performance. The CET Silver Award recognizes an outstanding safety record of working one year without a lost time accident.

The five facilities receiving awards have a combined total of 1,257 employees. Four awards were presented for operations at Comau's Novi and Southfield campuses. Comau's Field Service Division also received an award. This division consists of employees who travel to customer sites around the world to perform installation and service operations. Many manufacturing employees are represented by one of three unions: Novi Industries Employees Association (NIEA), Wisne Automation Employees Association (WAEA), and Comau Employees Association (CEA).

"This achievement is the result of a commitment by all Comau Inc. employees to provide a safe environment for everyone who sets foot in our facilities," said Comau Inc. Corporate Safety Manager, Megan Raines, CSP. "Comau Inc. is well-known for our outstanding safety performance thanks to a constant focus on safety which is supported by our leadership, engrained into our business, and demonstrated in the design of our products. We are continually working to improve our health and safety performance as we strive to reach our ultimate goal of zero injuries."

Besides going one year without a lost time accident, the facilities have completed the following criteria to receive the CET Silver Award:
  • Developed and implemented a comprehensive safety and health management system;
  • Established safety and health committees, with both employee and management participation;
  • Developed an employee training system, with an emphasis on how to do the work in a safe and healthful manner; and
  • Worked diligently to change their workplace culture to reflect the importance of employee safety.

Comau Inc. is committed to the safety of all their employees, customers, and visitors. This is accomplished by:

  • Emphasizing the importance of safety awareness and providing safety training to all employees;
  • Promoting safe employee behavior;
  • Encouraging employee participation in safety committees and safety initiatives;
  • Enforcing noteworthy housekeeping standards; and
  • Providing regular communications regarding safety.

The facilities have worked with the MIOSHA CET Division, and CET Senior Safety Consultants Lee Jay Kueppers and Karen Odell performed hazard surveys on site, which is a part of the award process. These surveys allowed them an opportunity to walk through the facility with a MIOSHA representative and correct any problem areas that were noted.

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code for Comau Inc. is 333514 − Special Die and Tool, Die Set, Jig, and Fixture Manufacturing. The total case incident rate (TCIR) for the five organizations combined was 1.63 in 2009, which is significantly below the Michigan industry average of 7.9.

"Companies that establish an integrated safety and health program reap the benefits of significantly reducing their injury and illness rates," said Kalinowski. "Reducing these rates not only protects employees - it has a healthy impact on a company's bottom line."

Comau Inc., headquartered in Southfield, has over 70 years of experience using global resources, engineering know-how, and lean manufacturing processes to provide sustainable automated solutions to customers in industries such as automotive, aerospace, packaging, defense, solar and wind energy, rail, recreational and more; from ideas and design to installation, maintenance and service.

Comau Inc. is part of the Comau Group, which is headquartered in Turin, Italy.
