Credit Union Division "Good News"

Contact:  OFIS (Toll-free) 1-877-999-6442
Agency: Financial and Insurance Regulation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 17, 1998

The Director of Michigan's Financial Institutions Bureau Credit Union Division, Roger Little, reports two "good news" items today:

Mr. Little has announced that the operating fee rates for the bureau's supervision and regulation of state-chartered credit unions has been reduced by 2.8% for 1998. Mr. Little credited the reduction to operational efficiencies, and assured that the bureau's goal is to "continue to operate in a cost efficient manner and pass the savings on to the credit unions we regulate."

In other news, the Credit Union Division received its 1998 accreditation from the Board of Directors of the National Association of State Credit Union Supervisors (NASCUS). NASCUS certified that Michigan's Credit Union Division again met all criteria necessary to fulfill its statutory responsibility to charter, examine, supervise, and regulate the credit unions chartered under the laws of the State of Michigan.

Nineteen states have received this honor; Michigan was the first state in the nation to be NASCUS accredited, and has earned accreditation annually since 1989.
