CIS Summarily Suspends Macomb Physician's License Due to Substance Abuse

Agency: Licensing and Regulatory Affairs

NOVEMBER 23, 2000 - The Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS) has summarily suspended the osteopathic medicine license of David Eugene Sikorski, D.O., for substance abuse. The CIS Bureau of Health Services orders a summary suspension when it believes the public’s health, safety and welfare warrant emergency action.

In November 1999, after the Department learned about Sikorski’s history with substance abuse, he was referred to the Health Professional Recovery Program (HPRP), a non-disciplinary monitoring program that supports recovery from substance abuse, chemical addiction and mental illness. Enacted legislatively in 1994, the HPRP encourages health professionals to address their problems before their impairment harms a patient or damages their careers.

Although Sikorski initially agreed to the requests of the program, he was not successful at following the recommended treatment. The HPRP closed his file and forwarded it to the Department. The Department subsequently determined that Sikorski suffers from a condition which may impair his mental and physical ability to practice osteopathic medicine safely, and, as a result, CIS summarily suspended his license. An administrative hearing will be scheduled to address the status of Sikorski’s suspended osteopathic medicine license.
