CIS Director Announces $5,000 Grant to Corn Marketing Group to Demonstrate the Use of Aviation Grade Ethanol

Agency: Licensing and Regulatory Affairs

MAY 30, 2000 - Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services Director Kathleen Wilbur announced that a $5,000 state grant will enable the Corn Marketing Program of Michigan to increase awareness of federally-certified Aviation Grade Ethanol (AGE85) and showcase an ethanol-converted airplane at public events.

The group will bring the plane to at least two major air shows and other fly-in events across the state to demonstrate the use of AGE85. An educational brochure outlining specific environmental benefits and the performance of this ethanol-based fuel will be distributed at these events.

"The Corn Marketing Program of Michigan’s project is aimed at increasing the visibility of this environmentally-friendly alternative fuel and educate aviation enthusiasts about its viability for current and future use," said Wilbur.

AGE85 is a new, low-cost, lead-free alternative aviation fuel that contains 85 percent ethanol. This plant-based fuel burns cleaner, extends the life of the engine, produces more power, and is more environmentally-friendly and less expensive than the industry standard.

"There are so many advantages of increasing awareness about this new fuel because of its low cost, environmental benefit and enhanced productivity," Wilbur said.

The grant is administered through the Michigan Biomass Energy Program of the CIS Energy Resources Division.

For further information, contact Jody Pollok of the Corn Marketing Program of Michigan at 517.323.6600 or Jan Patrick in the CIS Energy Resources Division at 517.241.6153.
