CIS Summarily Suspends Southfield Pharmacist's License for Defying Order

Agency: Licensing and Regulatory Affairs

NOVEMBER 09, 1999 - The Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS) has summarily suspended the pharmacist license of Daniel B. Cohn for failing to comply with an order of the Michigan Board of Pharmacy concerning substance abuse treatment and monitoring. The CIS Bureau of Health Services orders a summary suspension when it believes the public’s health, safety and welfare warrant emergency action.

Cohn was required by the Board’s order to submit to a chemical dependency evaluation and, if applicable, enter into a monitoring agreement with the Health Professional Recovery Program (HPRP), a monitoring program that supports recovery from substance abuse, chemical addiction and mental illness. Enacted legislatively five years ago, the HPRP encourages health professionals to address their problems before their impairment harms a patient or damages their careers.

When it was determined that Cohn needed to enter into a monitoring agreement, Cohn refused. The HPRP then closed his file and returned it to the Department, which summarily suspended his license. An administrative hearing will be scheduled to address the status of Cohn’s suspended pharmacist license.

Additional information about the HPRP is available by calling 1-800-453-3784.
