Michigan Revokes L&L Nursing Center License

Contact:  Maura Campbell 517 373-9280
Agency: Licensing and Regulatory Affairs

OCTOBER 07, 1998 - The Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS) has revoked the license of the L&L Nursing Center in Detroit, and appointed the Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI) to oversee the transfer of the remaining residents to other appropriate settings by the end of this week.

The emergency order was issued after the facility informed the Department that it could not comply with the Department's administrative orders of October 2 and October 6, 1998. Those orders were intended to correct deficiencies and assure oversight by MPHI until full compliance was achieved. Instead, the home said that it intended to cease operations immediately and would transfer residents to other homes.

"This action ensures that the announced closure is conducted in a safe and orderly fashion, and uses the professional resources of the Michigan Public Health Institute to assure that the transfers meet legal requirements." said Kathy Wilbur, CIS Director." "In addition, the license revocation makes it clear that we will hold providers accountable for poor care, and take strong action if needed to protect residents and assure safe operation of Michigan's nursing homes."

The Michigan Public Health Institute served a key role in overseeing the closure of the Venoy Nursing Center in Wayne last May.
