OCTOBER 06, 1998 - A state grant will allow a nonprofit energy and environmental organization to train 600 home buyers or builders on how to build the most energy efficient house.

The East Lansing-based Urban Options was awarded the $12,000 grant by the Energy Resources Division of the Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS).

"Those who build new homes using state-of-the-art energy efficient measures not only will use our natural resources in the most effective possible way, but will serve as models for many other builders," said Governor John Engler.

Urban Options also received a $4,983 grant to fund a wind and solar power demonstration. The project will include hands-on workshops to install the solar and wind systems, open house tours, and development of educational materials and brochures.

"By using this ‘seed' money to spread the word about sun and wind generator systems, it will grow educational roots that extend beyond the initial project," said CIS Director Kathleen Wilbur.

The grants are part of more than $100,000 in federal grants awarded to 20 nonprofit and public agencies to educate consumers about energy efficiency and renewable energy options.
