OCTOBER 02, 1998 - Ann Arbor residents will benefit from three state grants that will provide energy efficiency information in a variety of ways, announced Governor John Engler.

Recycle Ann Arbor was awarded a $12,000 grant to train 600 home builders or buyers on how to build the most energy efficient house. The City of Ann Arbor will receive a $10,000 grant to build a solar-powered fountain at its recycling center/landfill, and promote home energy ratings. In addition, the Ecology Center of Ann Arbor was awarded nearly $5,000 to encourage students at five elementary and middle schools to walk, bike or ride the bus to school.

"These grants will fund important projects that promote conserving energy and using our natural resources in the most efficient and energy-wise methods," Engler said. The grants were awarded by the Energy Resources Division of the Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS).

In addition to aerating the water and improving the ability of the landfill pond to support wildlife, the Ann Arbor recycling center solar fountain will be a visible demonstration to the thousands of school children and others who visit the Materials Recovery Facility at the landfill.

"These are important projects that will highlight, not only to adults, but to our children, the importance of using our energy resources wisely," said CIS Director Kathleen Wilbur.

The grants are part of more than $100,000 in federal awards to 20 nonprofit and public agencies to educate consumers about energy efficiency and renewable energy options.
