Michigan Moves To Protect Nursing Home Patients L & L Nursing Center Ordered to Suspend Admissions, Repair Systems

Agency: Licensing and Regulatory Affairs

OCTOBER 20, 1998 - The Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS) today issued an order to protect residents at the L & L Center nursing home located at 13241 W. Chicago in Detroit.

"Because of serious conditions found at the home, we have ordered the facility to immediately suspend admissions and to take immediate action to provide for adequate staffing, back up power and repairs to the facility," said CIS Director Kathleen Wilbur.

The order under the Michigan Public Health Code is in response to physical plant and resident care issues found in a survey that ended on Oct. 2, 1998 and the related investigation into the recent death of a resident. Earlier this week the survey team found the facility's hot water temperature was at a dangerous level, ranging from 125 to 149 degrees Fahrenheit, and declared an immediate jeopardy and immediate repairs under the federal nursing home enforcement program.

"We need to take immediate action to ensure the residents' safety and well-being. This order addresses the major concerns we have until we can fully review the survey reports and determine the need for any additional action," added Wilbur.

CIS surveyors will monitor the home during the weekend to assure compliance with the order and will make further decisions on Monday, Oct. 5, concerning additional remedies.
