December 23, 2003

Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth (DLEG) Director David C. Hollister today announced the award of an additional $161,200 in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funding to Capital Area Michigan Works!  The funding will be used to provide additional funds for employment-related supportive services for individuals participating in the Work First Program.

“A skilled workforce is essential to Michigan’s economic prosperity.  Work First is vital to our efforts to connect people to meaningful work that will lead to a brighter future for both them and our state,” said Hollister.

Work First is designed to establish and maintain a connection to the labor market for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families recipients, non-custodial parents, and recipients of non-cash assistance such child day care, Medicaid, and Food Stamps.  To make this connection, participants are placed into employment and occupationally relevant education and training programs.  The Work First Program is administered statewide by 25 locally governed Michigan Works! Agencies and Workforce Development Boards.

The Michigan Department of Labor  & Economic Growth is the newest department of state government. It is charged with promoting economic growth, job creation, and enhancing the quality of life for Michigan citizens.  Part of this mission also includes meeting Michigan’s workforce needs to enhance and maintain its economy.
