Mr. John C. Scott, MCB Commissioner
John C. Scott was born in the Detroit area with normal vision. He became completely blind in his left eye at the age of nine and in the right eye at the age of 19. He was an average student until he became blind. Once blind, he focused on school. His mother told him, "If you don't get an education, you will end up standing on a corner selling pencils." She had no idea of what accomplishments blind persons have made, but she knew that education would make a difference. John went to Detroit Bible College, Michigan Lutheran College, and ultimately transferred to Western Michigan University. As the saying goes, the rest is history:
--1970, bachelor of arts from Western Michigan University with double major in history and sociology and minor in education.
--1973, J.D. degree from Wayne State University.
--1973-75, was a fellow and then a staff attorney with the Reginald Heber Smith Foundation, assigned to Wayne County Legal Services.
--1973-75, part-time instructor at Wayne County Community College teaching business law and other law-related courses.
--November 1975--August 2007, worked 31 years for the City of Detroit as an attorney including work conducting veterans preference hearings and as a defense attorney for what is now known as the Detroit Department of Transportation, and as senior prosecutor for the city.
--Previously a member of the American Council of the Blind and its affiliated American Blind Lawyers Association.
--Currently Acting Treasurer of the Detroit Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Michigan.
--Hobbies include reading, working out, playing chess, and travel.
