The Michigan Commission for the Blind and the Special Needs Vision Clinic in Saginaw will hold a free, one-day open house to demonstrate some of their free and low-cost, vision-related services.   The open house will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Special Needs Vision Clinic, which is part of the Millet Learning Center, at 3660 Southfield Drive between S. Washington Road and Williamston Road in Saginaw.

The event is open to people of all ages.  Free vision screenings will be done on-site during the open house to determine individuals’ eligibility for services.

Brief presentations will be held throughout the day on a variety of topics of interest to those who have low vision or who are blind:

·         Adaptive techniques for check writing, learning math, and handwriting for people with limited or no vision

·         Advantages of the various types and colors of protective sunglasses

·         Computer programs that magnify on-screen text and “talking” screen readers

·         Kitchen tips and techniques for preparing and cooking food safely

·         Running a successful business (presentations by a local entrepreneurs who are blind)

·         Information on the Michigan Commission for the Blind’s Youth Low Vision Program, Vocational Rehabilitation Services, college preparatory services, and one-week training programs

·         Leisure-time activities

·         How to walk safely while being guided by a sighted person or while using a cane
