Licensure Requirements

The Landscape Architect statute has a two-part qualification requirement. An applicant for licensure has to meet both requirements in order to become licensed.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

An applicant must verify possession of at least 7 years of education and/or work experience. While a college degree is not required, an applicant must have taken university-level courses in the subjects included in a landscape architecture degree program accredited by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).  A person holding a bachelors degree in landscape architecture will be granted 4 years credit towards the 7 years experience requirement. A masters degree in landscape architecture will earn 1 additional year. No more than 5 years of experience credit may be granted for education.

Experience in the actual practice of landscape architecture must be verified by a minimum of 5 references, 3 of whom must be licensed landscape architects who can indicate a knowledge of the applicant's professional expertise. Applicants must have employers or supervisors and personal references complete and submit the Experience Verification Form directly to the board office. Not less than 2 years of professional experience is required of all applicants.

EXAMINATION

The LARE examination is administered by the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards. (CLARB). Please visit the CLARB website at www.clarb.org  or call (571) 432-0332 to obtain any examination information, applications and reference materials.
