Internship Supervisor Requirements

An applicant for status as an intern supervisor is required to:

  • be a licensed Michigan polygraph examiner, or in the case of a nonresident, meet the qualifications for licensure in Michigan;
  • have completed a formal course of instruction at a polygraph school approved by the board;
  • have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, unless the applicant was licensed in Michigan as a polygraph examiner prior to December 31, 1979;
  • have not less than 3 continuous years of experience in administering polygraph examinations and has personally conducted 400 examinations of which not less than 150 were specific issue examinations;
  • provide evidence of having completed, within the previous 24 months, 40 hours of continuing education approved by the board, or completed 15 semester hours of academic credit at an accredited college or university, or completed not less than 20 semester hours of academic credit at an accredited college or university and 20 hours of continuing education approved by the board.

Intern supervisor status is granted for a 24 month period and may be renewed upon providing proof of having completed continuing education/academic credit.

Upon completion of an intern's first 25 examinations, an intern supervisor is required to submit a written report to the department regarding the intern's proficiency and competency in conducting polygraph examinations, and whether continued on-site monitoring is necessary.
