LARA Services for Veterans

The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs has prepared a compilation of services that may apply to Michigan's Veterans, active military and military families. These services include occupational or business licensing, construction, workplace safety and health, unemployment, and utility assistance. 


 

Occupational or Business Licensing

 

  • The Corporations, Securities & Commercial Licensing Bureau (CSCL) performs the public facing duties of helping to grow business activity in Michigan through the Corporations Division, and by protecting the health, welfare, and safety of Michigan citizens through regulatory and licensing functions of the Securities, Licensing, and Enforcement divisions. Construction Code Professionals

  • The Bureau of Construction Codes (BCC) is responsible for the administration of the Construction Code Act, the Building Officials Registration Act, electrical, mechanical and plumbing licensing laws, as well as the boiler, elevator, and manufactured housing programs. The Electrical Administrative Act has been revised (MCL 338.883d) to allow the department to consider experience received in the military to be counted toward qualification for the written journey electrician's exam. http://www.michigan.gov/lara/0,4601,7-154-35299_10575_33813_33817---,00.html


The State Plumbing Act was revised (MCL 338.3535) to allow the department to consider experience received in the military to be counted toward qualification the write the journey plumber's exam

Workplace Safety and Health

 

  • The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) protects Michigan workers by promoting workplace safety and health through outreach training services, fair enforcement, and cooperative agreements. For more information, visit the MIOSHA website at http://www.michigan.gov/miosha

Unemployment

  • The Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) helps jobless workers and their families by providing a temporary income while the workers are unemployed and seeking new employment. For more information, visit the UIA website at http://www.michigan.gov/uia 

    The Unemployment Compensation for Ex-Service Personnel (UCX) program provides unemployment insurance protection to ex-service personnel of all ranks who served in the Armed Forces of the United States and who meet various Federal and State requirements outlined in the brochure. http://www.michigan.gov/documents/uia/UCX-982_204657_7.pdf

 

Utility Assistance

 

  • The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) administers policies and regulations including rate setting, to ensure that energy, communications, and transportation services are provided in an efficient, reliable, and safe manner to adequately meet the needs of Michigan residents. The Michigan Public Service Commission's Consumer Standards and Billing Practice Rules provide utility shutoff protection for eligible military families, to learn more visit our Consumer Tip, Utility Help for Military Families.

Consumers are encouraged to first contact their gas, electric, telephone or cable company to discuss billing or service issues.  If a resolution cannot be reached, contact the MPSC for help in dealing with utility concerns at 1-800-292-9555 (from within Michigan) or 517-241-6180 (from outside of Michigan) or file a web complaint.
