April 28, 2017 - The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) has immediately suspended the license to practice as a medical doctor of Kenneth Chun of Bloomfield Hills, MI. LARA served an order summarily suspending Dr. Chun’s license pursuant to the Public Health Code, which provides for the summary suspension of a health professional’s license when the public health, safety, or welfare requires emergency action.
LARA filed an Administrative Complaint alleging that Dr. Chun overprescribed commonly abused and diverted controlled substances, such as methadone, alprazolam, and hydrocodone for other than lawful medical purposes. The complaint alleges Dr. Chun routinely prescribed medication, including addictive opioids to patients without any medical justification.
LARA’s investigation found prescription data from the Michigan Automated Prescription System revealed that Dr. Chun prescribed more than 26,000 prescriptions in 2015. Dr. Chun was the number two highest prescriber of all controlled substance in Michigan and number one in methadone.
“As part of the state’s comprehensive effort to fight the opioid epidemic, LARA has taken aggressive steps to prevent our medical professionals from unlawfully prescribing controlled substances,” said LARA Director Shelly Edgerton. “We will continue to take strong regulatory actions against any licensed practitioner who violates the law.”
An important recommendation of Gov. Snyder’s Michigan Prescription Drug and Opioid Abuse Task Force called for a more comprehensive enforcement program against licensed health professionals who participate in overprescribing. LARA, in partnership with Attorney General Bill Schuette’s office, established a Drug Monitoring Section in August 2016 that works to identify, investigate and seek enhanced sanctions against licensed health care professionals who overprescribe dangerous drugs, such as opiates, for other than lawful medical purposes.
