Barrier Free Design Board Responsibilities and Meeting Schedule

The Barrier Free Design Board was created by Act 190 of 1974, amending 1966 PA 1. The board may receive, review, process, grant, or deny requests for exceptions to the barrier free design specifications; require alternatives when exceptions are granted; receive, process, review, and act on complaints of noncompliance, and make recommendations for barrier free design rules.

Complaints of alleged noncompliance to barrier free design requirements must be made in writing using the complaint form, by letter, or via email and must contain the following information:

Name, address, and phone number of complainant (OPTIONAL)           
Property location of alleged violation               
Name and address of property the complaint is against
Description of alleged violation
Attach copies of any substantiating documentation

The 9 members of the board are appointed by the governor, with the advice and consent of the senate, to serve 3-years terms. Upon expiration of a term, a member may continue to serve until a successor is appointed.
