MIOSHA Public Service Campaign

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of its program to create a safer and healthier work environment and reduce the risk of injury and illness to workers in the state, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) is launching a new public service campaign to raise awareness of the importance of workplace safety and health. The MIOSHA program is part of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).

The campaign includes posters and Public Service Announcements (PSAs) in both English and Spanish on the topics of fall protection, personal protective equipment and respirator safety.

“June 2014 marked the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act,” said MIOSHA Director Martha Yoder. “In recognition of this important milestone, the agency has spent the year bolstering worker safety through efforts such as its matching grant program, which awarded small businesses matching grants of up to $5,000 to purchase safety and health-related equipment, and a student art contest to get students thinking and talking about occupational safety and health. Now, MIOSHA is excited to continue the celebration by offering important safety messages to Michigan employers and employees.”

Falls are a leading cause of death for construction workers in the state and the nation. Between 2010 and 2014, 41 percent of the fatalities in Michigan’s construction industry consisted of falls. As Michigan enters the construction season, MIOSHA is reminding employers and workers of the importance of fall prevention, as well as the need for proper personal protective equipment on the job.

“At the end of the day, our goal is to send all workers home to their loved ones in the same condition they came to work in,” said Yoder. “With the appropriate protective gear and safety measures, all worker fatalities are preventable.”
