Have you been to any of our Business Enterprise Program (BEP) cafeterias, snack stands, or vending locations?  Here are some frequently asked questions about our facilities:

 

If a BEP vending machine owes me money, how do I get my money back?

What should I expect as a customer when visiting a BEP facility?

 

BEP facilities provide a wide range of products and services, including hot food, snacks, beverages, catering, and coffee service.  To find out about these services in your area, please call 800-292-4200, e-mail martinc2@michigan.gov, or contact any BEP operator.

 

Who monitors the cafeterias and other BEP locations to ensure high standards of quality, food safety and cleanliness?

 

A Business Enterprise Program staff person visits each location on a regular basis to ensure that the program's high standards are maintained. In addition, as required by state law, all BEP food service facilities are licensed and regularly inspected by the local health department.

 

We are having a staff meeting, and we would like to have refreshments. Does the Business Enterprise Program operator in our building provide coffee and cold drinks?

A member of our team recently had a baby. Our team would like to have an informal pot luck baby shower on our lunch break. Is this permissible?

Yes, the BEP rules apply to official functions. Employees may get together for informal functions on their own time and get refreshments from any source. Our Business Enterprise operators welcome the opportunity to provide any items from supplies to cakes, drinks or full meals. Please consider us for any function. Our office is planning a meeting. We would like bagels from our favorite bagel baker. Can our operator provide these bagels?

Yes, the Business Enterprise Program operator you ordinarily deal with can assist you to plan any kind of event. You can expect to get any food or drink available in the community.  Special orders do not upset us, we welcome them. Is office coffee service part of the services provided by the Business Enterprise Program?

Yes. Office coffee services are among the services which may be provided by our operators. The Business Enterprise Program is ready to meet your coffee service needs. We can provide premium coffee, flavored coffee, tea, hot chocolate and bottled water. Are there some specific written guidelines for state government departments and agencies planning to have catered events?

Yes. Public Act 260 of 1978, effective 2004, expanded the definition of food service to include catering and coffee service. In July 2005, a letter was sent to all state department directors by David Hollister, then director of the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, describing the catering services available from vendors in the Michigan Commission for the Blind's Business Enterprise Program. In October 2005, a DMB memo sent to all administrative officers provided guidelines for state government departments and agencies when planning functions with food and beverages in state buildings.
