Michigan Liquor Control Commission Releases August 2011 Statistics; Promoting Transparency within the Department

Agency: Licensing and Regulatory Affairs

October 26, 2011 -  Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) Chairman Andy Deloney issues August 2011 Licensing and Enforcement Division statistics to keep licensees, consumers, and industry members informed on a monthly basis.

During the month of August 2011 there were 1,533 liquor applications put on the administrative docket:

Of those 1,533 applications:

·          101 new liquor licenses were issued:

o    8 to on-premises locations,
o    21 to off-premises locations and
o    72 manufacturer and wholesaler licenses.

·          629 licensing transactions processed, which include:

o    386 on-premises,
o    129 off-premises,
o    114 manufacturer and wholesaler licenses.

·          709 special 24-hour licenses issued to non-profit organizations with a year-to-date total of 4,380.

The Enforcement Division of the MLCC investigated 218 license applications and 271 complaints in August. The complaints investigated included selling to minors, selling drugs, hidden ownerships, confiscation of licenses, etc.

As a result of decoy operation stops at retail establishments, 14 percent of the 308 licensed establishments contacted were cited as a result of the August controlled buy operations.

"An issue that we are still seeing is that 72 percent of the violations occurred after the licensees or their representatives checked the decoy's identification. The high incidence rate of selling to the under aged individual after a check of the identification highlights the continued need for oversight and continuous education," said MLCC Chairman Andy Deloney.
