Physical Therapist Assistant Examination
National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) for Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA)
To become licensed in Michigan, an applicant must download the application from the physical therapy homepage located under Licensing Applications and Forms.
To be made eligible to take the NPTE, the licensure application, licensure fee and required documentation must be completed and submitted to:
Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
Bureau of Professional Licensing
PO Box 30670
Lansing, MI 48909
The NPTE PTA is a computer-based examination administered by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) and given at Prometric Testing Centers. Applicants for the NPTE PTA must apply online. Online application and payment for the NPTE PTA are available at www.fsbpt.org. See the Candidate Handbook for complete instructions or check the website at www.fsbpt.org.
If an applicant has registered for the NPTE PTA, the Department will notify FSBPT when the applicant is eligible to take the exam. FSBPT will then send the applicant an Authorization to Test (ATT) and information on how to contact one of the Prometric Testing Centers to schedule an appointment to test.
Results are reported approximately three weeks following the examination date.
Michigan Jurisprudence Exam
In addition to the NPTE, all applicants for physical therapy licensure must take and pass the jurisprudence examination before licensure can be issued. The passing score on the exam is 75%, (15/20) for the physical therapist assistant jurisprudence exam. The jurisprudence examination covers material that can be found in the Administrative Rules of the Michigan Board of Physical Therapy and in Article 15, parts 161 and 178 of the Michigan Public Health Code.
Licensure candidates must take the jurisprudence examination through PSI. You may contact PSI to schedule your exam by visiting www.psiexams.com or by calling PSI at 800-733-9267.
