Lottery's Mega Millions Game May Get Even Bigger! Texas Lottery Looking to Join Mega Millions Group

Contact:  Stepheni L. Schlinker (517) 335-5648
Agency: Lottery

LANSING, June 12, 2003 – Friday the 13th could prove to be a very lucky day for someone.  The Mega Millions jackpot has reached $115 million for the Friday, June 13 drawing.  As Lottery players feverishly purchase tickets for Friday’s drawing, the directors of the lotteries in the Mega Millions group contemplate whether or not the Texas Lottery should be added to that group.

Legislation was recently passed in Texas that would allow the Texas Lottery to participate in a multistate Lottery game.  The Texas Lottery has expressed an interest in joining the Mega Millions group.  During a meeting today, the directors of the 10 states that currently comprise the Mega Millions group (Michigan, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Washington) will be voting on whether to add the Texas Lottery as the 11th state in the group.

Michigan Lottery Commissioner Gary Peters is available for interviews on Friday, June 13, 2003 in the morning to discuss both the Mega Millions jackpot and the possibility of the Texas Lottery joining the Mega Millions group.  If you would like to set up an interview with Commissioner Peters, please call Jennifer Quimby at (517) 335-5648.
