LANSING, January 19, 2001 – A lucky Detroit man will be enjoying his retirement in style, thanks to the Michigan Lottery! The retired Detroit police officer matched all six numbers and was the sole winner of a $1,039,242 Michigan Lotto jackpot.
The 48-year-old winner, who requested anonymity, was the only Michigan Lottery player to match all six numbers in the January 13 Michigan Lotto drawing. The winning numbers for that drawing were: 11, 14, 21, 39, 44, and 49. That day’s announced jackpot was $2 million. The winner, however, chose to receive his winnings in one lump-sum payment of $1,039,242, the present cash value of the jackpot before taxes.
"When I checked my ticket, I was elated," the winner said. "I called my wife to tell her the good news. I had a feeling I would hit the Lottery one day!"
The lucky man purchased the winning Michigan Lotto ticket at Marathon Livernois, 17100 Livernois Ave., in Detroit. Prior to turning the winning Michigan Lotto ticket in at Lottery headquarters in Lansing, the winner said he kept it in a safe place in his home.
Michigan’s newest millionaire said he plans to share his winnings with his children and grandchildren.
Michigan Lotto drawings are conducted every Wednesday and Saturday evening. The estimated jackpot for Saturday’s (January 20) drawing is $2.1 million.
