Who is affected by Alzheimer's disease?

Predominantly, older people are affected by Alzheimer’s disease, the onset usually begining after age 60. Of those 85 and over, half will develop symptoms of the disease. The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that there are 167,000 people in Michigan with Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions that cause dementia.

A small percentage of younger people may develop early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Some younger people with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease may have a familial or genetic type of the disease. The genetic form can be inherited.
