BACKGROUND: In June, MDOT announced $15 million in federal transportation project
funding for 44 small urban communities in Michigan during 2006 and 2007, including 12 projects located in the Upper Peninsula. The grants are designated for road improvements and transit projects in small urban areas with a population base of 5,000 to 50,000.
The Small Urban Program is an approach unique to Michigan, which
began in 1991 in an effort to invest federal dollars in small urban
communities throughout the state. To be eligible for funding, projects
must be located within the federal aid urban area boundary, located on the federal-aid highway system, and consistent with regional land use and development plans.
