The City of St. Ignace, population 2678, is taking applications for the position of City Police Chief.  The Chief oversees the operation of the City Police Department consisting of five full-time police officers and one police clerk.  This is a position which includes, but is not limited to, road patrol duties, administrative oversight, public relations, and grant writing.

Minimum Qualifications:  MCOLES Certification
Salary Range:  $48,000+ depending on qualifications

COMMENTS: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF INVESTIGATIONS

Eastern Michigan University is seeking applicants for an Assistant Director of Investigations for its Police Department.  Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to: plan, organize and direct assigned duties, programs and activities of the EMU Police Department with primary responsibility for directing and serving as a participant in the department's crime response and investigation unit. Qualifications for this position include: Michigan Commission of Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certified, Bachelor's degree in Criminology or related field; or equivalent through a combination of education, training and work experience are necessary.  Five years of progressively more responsible detective/investigations related law enforcement experience, including at least three years experience in the direct supervision of detectives and the investigations administrative functions, is necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • ASSOCIATE DEGREE in Law Enforcement or two years of related college-level coursework or a Bachelor or higher degree in any discipline or the equivalent in combined education and related experience.  Related experience may include certified PA 330 Security Police, Corrections Officer/Deputy or prior certified Police Officer experience or  graduation from a Michigan Police Academy or:
  • Two years experience in the Military Police with Honorable Discharge.
  • Minimum four years of any military duty with Honorable Discharge.
  • Minimum six years of Military Reserve or National Guard experience with an Honorable Discharge or currently active with good standing.
  • Minimum six years of Police Reserve experience.
  • Current passing score on the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) Physical Agility and Written Tests. Information on MCOLES can be found at http://www.michigan.gov/mcoles or by calling (517) 322-1417.  Apply directly with testing centers.
  • Must be capable of performing the essential functions of this position (listed on reverse) with or without reasonable accommodation as determined by a post-job-offer physical examination.
  • Must be willing to maintain residency within proximity to Dearborn Police Headquarters no greater than that which would allow an officer to respond in a timely manner for duty during an emergency.
  • Must meet all employment standards for Michigan Law Enforcement Officers as established by MCOLES including:
    1. A valid driver's license and good driving record.
    2. Good moral character and no record of criminal convictions (including expungements).
    3. U. S. Citizenship.
    4. Minimum age, 18 years.

AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION YOU MUST SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING OR YOUR APPLICATION WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED:

  1. An official City of Dearborn application form; resume may be attached.
  2. Official college transcripts or copy of request submitted to college.
  3. Written notification from MCOLES of Physical Agility and Written Test scores.
  4. Two professional letters of reference are required.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:
The results at each step in the application process will determine eligibility for continuation to subsequent steps.  The process will include application review, written exam, personal history questionnaire, oral-board interview, background investigation, and chief's interview.

Non-certified applicants who are selected will be enrolled in a police academy.  All candidates are required to successfully complete a Field Training Program.

SPECIAL NOTES:

  • MCOLES physical agility results are valid for six (6) months.  Valid MCOLES physical agility results MUST accompany application.  If at any time during the process your physical agility results expire, you MUST provide new results in order to continue in the process.  Failure to provide new valid passing physical agility results will exclude you from continuing in the hiring process.
  • Please do not send picture IDs with application.
  • Must satisfactorily complete medical and psychological examinations prior to start date.

Performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property throughout the county. Maintains law and order; prevents crime; deals with complaints; and renders emergency assistance to the public as a uniformed officer and may serve civil papers. While work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and standard methods and practices and general supervision is received from a superior officer, this employee is frequently required to exercise initiative and independent judgment under emergency conditions. The work may involve an element of personal danger. Position is scheduled for 1,000 hours per year or less.

Requires high school graduation, M.C.O.L.E.S. Certified. Licensed as paramedic preferred. Able to pass rigid physical examination and thorough background investigation. Police experience preferred.
