The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards is offering free Domestic Violence Training to law enforcement agencies. This training is intended for law enforcement officers. It will be provided at requesting agency locations or in a desired region, in conjunction with neighboring agencies. The training is funded through a federal STOP Violence Against Women grant from the U.S. Department of Justice through the
Michigan Department of Human Services
and the
Michigan Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board
. There is no cost to your department or agency.
The purpose of the training is to update in-service law enforcement officers, first-line supervisors, and administrators on recently mandated legal and procedural changes regarding the law enforcement response to domestic violence. It also covers policy and procedures recommended in the Model Policy - The Law Enforcement Response to Domestic Violence.
The course consists of eight hours of training devoted to the most current domestic violence laws and recommended response procedures. MCOLES in-service training credit is available for successful completion of the course. The course content is consistent with the training received by basic training graduates and is based on the mandates of law, as well as new legal updates. It incorporates state mandates, as well as federal mandates. The course is taught by an instructor team consisting of MCOLES approved legal, law enforcement response, and domestic violence service provider instructors.
Each officer receives the Michigan Law Enforcement Response to Domestic Violence Officer Manual
and a copy of the Model Policy.
The manual was developed specifically for use in this course and contains all the relevant law. It is structured so it can be used as a reference handbook when returning to service. The manual is Michigan specific and is consistent with the latest domestic violence legislation.
