    The Sylvan Lake Police Department is accepting applications for the position of Part-Time Police Officer. The Sylvan Lake Police Department is a community oriented agency with a mission of providing the people of Sylvan Lake with exemplary police services. Officers are expected to be dedicated, committed and maintain a high standard of police professionalism both on and off-duty.  This is a part-time position at a wage of $16.50.

    QUALIFICATIONS:  By the closing date of the announcement, an applicant must:


    Be a citizen of the United States or resident alien with the right to work in the United States.

    • Have been awarded an Associate Degree in Law Enforcement or Police Administration or a Bachelor Degree in any non-Criminal Justice discipline.

    • Be free from any physical defects, chronic diseases, organic diseases, organic or functional conditions, or mental and emotional instabilities which may tend to impair the efficient performance of duties or which might endanger the lives of others or the individual employee; and produce a passing MCOLES physical fitness certificate obtained within the preceding twelve (12) months of the applicant's interview date; and meet all other physical requirements as determined by the Civil Service Commission and a physician appointed by the City.

    The Park Ranger Division is a full–service law enforcement agency headquartered in Flint, Michigan. The Ranger Division currently consists of a Chief, Detective and 40 sworn, Full-time and Seasonal Park Rangers. The Ranger Division is the primary law enforcement agency assigned to patrol the Park Commission’s properties. The Park Rangers enforce all laws including Federal, State, Marine and local ordinances with emphasis on community policing. The Ranger Division operates 24/7 year round. Rangers are tasked with investigating criminal complaints that range from violations of the Leash law to Homicides.

    Genesee County Parks consists of 11,000 acres with 21 developed park properties spread over two counties, making it the largest county parks system in the State of Michigan. The parks property include lakes, rivers, beaches, walking trails, horse riding, ORV, nature preserves and a 1800’s theme park village with a steam engine passenger railroad system and paddleboat.

    Minimum qualifications:

    • Must have a valid driver's license, with a driving record free of suspension, revocation and moving violations for the prior two years.

Ypsilanti operates under the Council-Manger form of government with the Police Chief reporting to the City Manager.

    Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, business administration, public administration or a related field; progressively responsible police management experience as evidenced by the attainment of multiple command positions; valid Michigan driver’s license; and current MCOLES certification or the ability to obtain both (employment agreement contingent upon MCOLES certification).

    The ideal candidate will display evidence of leadership skills; commitment to diversity; and applied community policing experience in a diverse and urban community similar to Ypsilanti. Additional training from the FBI National Academy, School of Police Staff and Command or similar program is a plus.

    BERRIEN SPRINGS ORONOKO TOWNSHIP POLICE - FULL & PART-TIME POLICE OFFICER(S)

    The Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Police Department is accepting applications for the position of fulltime and part-time police officer(s). The ideal candidate will be MCOLES certified or certifiable or be able to meet the standards to enter and complete an MCOLES approved police academy.  As a condition of employment, the applicant must be able to possess a firearm at all times, be able to access LEIN/NCIC and have no driving restrictions.

    Applicants must be able to pass an extensive background investigation, an interview panel and meeting with the chief of police.  If granted a conditional offer of employment, a psychological examination, drug screen meeting MCOLES standards and be able to perform all of the essential job functions of a police officer as outlined and determined by MCOLES (see MCOLES website at www.michigan.gov/mcoles).

    Person(s) working for or with the BSOTPD may be given first consideration in hiring as long as all other conditions can be met. 

    BASIC MINIMUM GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:  Work on rotating shifts, any time of the day and day of the week; performing security patrols; traffic control; investigation and first aid at accidents; detection, investigation and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct; participates in investigating criminal  law  violations  occurring  within  the  Township and Village limits; obtaining  evidence and compiling information regarding these crimes, preparing cases for filing of charges, testifying in court, and related activities; carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, Township and Village laws and ordinances. This position requires substantial contact with the general public, court officials, and other city officials while in the performance of police operating activities.

    The applicant must demonstrate that they are a good self-motivator, can work with limited supervision and interact well with a very diverse community and a variety of cultures. Those applying for part-time positions should be expected to work a minimum of 10-15 hours in a bi-weekly period.

    The department conducts almost all of its paperwork on electronic formats.  The applicant must have the ability to do reports from in the car and print them back at the station house.  These reports include; E-Crash reports, E-Tickets.  E-Daily reports will be enacted shortly. Applicants who possess computer skills may also have a priority.  All candidates should have the ability to communicate well, both in writing and verbally; being able to articulate facts and information in a well thought out chronological order and be able to talk in public, testify in court and have the ability to explain their actions to a judge, jury and/or magistrate as well as department command personnel.

    COMMUNITY BACKGROUND:  Berrien Springs - Oronoko Township, is a very diverse, rural community 15 miles from the Indiana State line with Old US 31 leading from Niles, MI and US 31 leading from South Bend and the Indiana Toll Road.  Berrien Springs enjoys a vast mixture of fruit and vegetable farms.  It is bordered by the St. Joseph River, providing for great fishing opportunities at the St. Joseph River Dam.  Berrien Springs is the home of the Berrien County Youth Fair as well as Andrews University, a private Seventh-day Adventist religious university with a student population and staff around 5,000.  Andrews University has representation from over 95 foreign nations, so it is important for the applicant to understand the variety of cultural differences they will experience. There is also a Boy Scout Camp, the University Air Park and a large number of adult foster care homes within the jurisdiction.

    MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of a Police Officer, tasks may involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, climbing, and may also involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of extremely heavy objects (200+ pounds). Fighting, running, shooting, and hearing loud noises, driving, sitting, and standing for long hours at a time are also typical.  Working in the outdoors during all types of weather conditions, be able to work in extremely cold, freezing temperatures, snow, extremely high temperatures and humidity.  Wearing required standard body gear and equipment applies in the preservation of life and property.

    PROCESS:  Applicants must submit a basic application, initial signed department and MCOLES background waivers, along with a cover letter and resume / curricula vitae, copies of driver's license and social security card to the Executive Assistant to the Chief of Police. The cover letter should indicate at a minimum why they desire to work for the BSOTPD, their basic knowledge and understanding of the Township and Village as well as future goals and objectives for continued employment or long term goals of moving and working at and/or for other agencies. 

    Those applicants who pass initial screening will be provided an extensive background packet that they must complete in full in order for a detailed background investigation to be completed.

    Those applicants passing the initial background investigation will be required to pass an initial interview with an interview panel.  Following any follow-up background investigation that may be needed, a meeting will be conducted with the Chief of Police for a final determination.

    If the applicant is successful and moves to the next phase, a conditional offer of employment will be given requiring a psychological examination, drug screening and physical examination.  If given a final offer of employment both full and part-time positions will require the passing of the department initial firearms qualification program, FTO program and a probationary period of up to one year.

    • Perform duties as assigned twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week;
    • Physically subdue, chase including but not limited to running, climbing, and lifting a minimum of 50 pounds to apprehend persons committing crimes against any persons, including pupils, personnel and properties;
    • Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in preventing controlling and investigating anti-social or illegal activities by persons or groups directed against school facilities, pupils or personnel;
    • Assist in the orientation of school administrators and pupils concerning security measures;
    • Maintain the Code of Conduct and dress as required by the Police Department;
    • Must be able to use firearms according to required Department standards;
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned, by the Chief of Police or Designee.
