The Park Ranger Division is a full–service law enforcement agency headquartered in Flint, Michigan. The department conducts almost all of its paperwork on electronic formats. The applicant must have the ability to do reports from in the car and print them back at the station house. These reports include; E-Crash reports, E-Tickets. E-Daily reports will be enacted shortly. Applicants who possess computer skills may also have a priority. COMMUNITY BACKGROUND: Berrien Springs - Oronoko Township, is a very diverse, rural community 15 miles from the Indiana State line with Old US 31 leading from Niles, MI and US 31 leading from South Bend and the Indiana Toll Road. Berrien Springs enjoys a vast mixture of fruit and vegetable farms. It is bordered by the St. Joseph River, providing for great fishing opportunities at the St. Joseph River Dam. Berrien Springs is the home of the Berrien County Youth Fair as well as Andrews University, a private Seventh-day Adventist religious university with a student population and staff around 5,000. Andrews University has representation from over 95 foreign nations, so it is important for the applicant to understand the variety of cultural differences they will experience. There is also a Boy Scout Camp, the University Air Park and a large number of adult foster care homes within the jurisdiction.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of a Police Officer, tasks may involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, climbing, and may also involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of extremely heavy objects (200+ pounds). Fighting, running, shooting, and hearing loud noises, driving, sitting, and standing for long hours at a time are also typical. Working in the outdoors during all types of weather conditions, be able to work in extremely cold, freezing temperatures, snow, extremely high temperatures and humidity. Wearing required standard body gear and equipment applies in the preservation of life and property.
PROCESS: Applicants must submit a basic application, initial signed department and MCOLES background waivers, along with a cover letter and resume / curricula vitae, copies of driver's license and social security card to the Executive Assistant to the Chief of Police. The cover letter should indicate at a minimum why they desire to work for the BSOTPD, their basic knowledge and understanding of the Township and Village as well as future goals and objectives for continued employment or long term goals of moving and working at and/or for other agencies.
Those applicants who pass initial screening will be provided an extensive background packet that they must complete in full in order for a detailed background investigation to be completed.
Those applicants passing the initial background investigation will be required to pass an initial interview with an interview panel. Following any follow-up background investigation that may be needed, a meeting will be conducted with the Chief of Police for a final determination.
If the applicant is successful and moves to the next phase, a conditional offer of employment will be given requiring a psychological examination, drug screening and physical examination. If given a final offer of employment both full and part-time positions will require the passing of the department initial firearms qualification program, FTO program and a probationary period of up to one year.

- Make immediate on-site investigations of crimes or offenses while collecting evidence; securing witnesses and testifying in court;
- Perform duties as assigned twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week;
- Physically subdue, chase including but not limited to running, climbing, and lifting a minimum of 50 pounds to apprehend persons committing crimes against any persons, including pupils, personnel and properties;
- Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in preventing controlling and investigating anti-social or illegal activities by persons or groups directed against school facilities, pupils or personnel;
- Assist in the orientation of school administrators and pupils concerning security measures;
- Maintain the Code of Conduct and dress as required by the Police Department;
- Must be able to use firearms according to required Department standards;
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned, by the Chief of Police or Designee.
