The City of Grand Haven Public Safety Department is beginning a hiring selection process for the position of Public Safety Officer III. We will create a ranked list of potential candidates for hire as future openings occur.  The list will be created and maintained for one year.

Under the supervision of the Public Safety Sergeant, this individual performs the duties of police officer, firefighter; and medical first responder. These duties include enforcing local ordinances and state laws, responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, affecting the physical arrest of suspects, operation of emergency vehicles, conducting criminal investigations, and entering areas dangerous to life and health to extinguish fires in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

Applicants must have the ability to work under pressure, act quickly and decisively, as well as obtain accurate information through interview, interrogation and observation. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to analyze information and to communicate and interact professionally with other employees, the general public and various professional contacts.  The extensive physical requirements for this position include the ability to lift and carry objects up to 165 pounds.

A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university is preferred and the applicant must be licensed or have completed all necessary training to be licensed as a police officer through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) by December 1, 2013. Certification level of Firefighter I and II in accordance with the standards set by the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council and current Medical First Responder license is preferred at the time of this posting.  However, the department will provide the required fire and EMS training for the right candidate.  The starting salary is $20.288 per hour based on the current union contract, with a work schedule of 2184 hours per year.

Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Police Is Seeking Applicants For The Position Of Part-Time Police Officer 

The Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Police Department, is looking to hire up to (4) part-time police officers.  The applicant must be MCOLES certified or certifiable and it is preferred to have 2-4 years of experience. It is desired that the applicant can work at least 8-10 hours per week as needed on any shift.

The applicant must demonstrate that they are a good self-motivator, can work with limited supervision and interact well with a very diverse community and a variety of cultures. 

Berrien Springs - Oronoko Township, is a rural community 15 miles from the Indiana State line with Old US 31 leading from Niles, MI and US 31 leading from South Bend and the Indiana Toll Road.  Berrien Springs enjoys a vast mixture of fruit and vegetable farms.  It is bordered by the St. Joseph River providing for great fishing opportunities at the St. Joseph River Dam.  Berrien Springs is the home of the Berrien County Youth Fair as well as Andrews University, a private Seventh-day religious University with a student population and staff around 5000.  Andrews University has representation from over 95 foreign nations, so it is important for the applicant to understand the variety of cultural differences they will experience. There is also a Boy Scout Camp, the University Air Park and a large number of adult foster care homes within the jurisdiction.

The department conducts most all of its paperwork on electronic formats, from E-Crash reports, E-Tickets, the ability to do reports in the car and print them back at the station house.  E-Daily reports will be enacted shortly.  So computer skills are a must.

Starting pay is $15.00 per hour.  Applications can be picked up at the BSOPD or requested via email; the applicant will be required to pass a background check, physical, psychological examination and firearms qualification and attend all training.  Most full time positions are filled by part-time personnel.
