The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for part-time Road Patrol Deputy. Starting wage is $15.511 p/h with top wage of $22.573 p/h at 4 years of service. At the discretion of the Sheriff and upon approval from the Board of Commissioners, applicants may be eligible to start at the 2 year wage step of $20.386 per hour, based on several factors including: previous training, education, and experience. Applicants being considered for employment will be required to pass a criminal background check, psychological examination, and physical examinations, which include a drug screen.

As a member of the Sheriff's Road Patrol, performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property throughout the county. Maintains law and order, prevents crime, deals with complaints, and renders emergency assistance to the public as a uniformed officer. Also may serve civil papers. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and standard methods and practices. A degree of independent initiative and judgment must be exercised by the employee under emergency conditions. The work may involve an element of danger. May have opportunities to perform duties with the Sheriff’s Marine/ORV/Snowmobile Patrols.

The qualified candidate will have the following knowledge and skills:

The ability to quickly learn law enforcement methods, practices and procedures. Ability to gain a good working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws and to attain efficiency in the methods and practices of criminal investigation expected. Ability to carry out instructions and swiftly adopt an effective and sound course of action, as well as an ability to deal fairly and effectively with the public. Good powers of observation, sound judgment, good moral character, combined with excellent physical and mental condition, courage, strength and the ability to withstand stress required. Proficiency in the use of firearms. Must possess excellent verbal communication skills and be capable of adapting to potentially violent or unstable situations.

Required Education, Training, and Experience:

Graduation from high school and MCOLES licensure required, preferably supplemented by specialized training courses in employees field of specialty. Associates Degree required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Must possess a valid driver's license.  Any history of license suspension and/or restrictions are not immediate disqualifiers but will be strongly considered and evaluated. No felony convictions; no pending felony or misdemeanor charges. No domestic violence convictions.
