National Guard Engages in Lunch Buddies Mentoring Program in Lansing

On Monday, January 12, the Michigan National Guard celebrated a unique partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters Michigan Capital Region to offer a school-based mentoring program at Gardner Middle School in Lansing.  The program, called Lunch Buddies, engages adults with young students one-on-one in a school location.  Matches meet once a week during the school day.

"The Michigan National Guard is excited about this new opportunity to help young people," said Lieutenant Colonel Shawn Harris.  "Our goal is to match 25 guardsmen with students to provide support and encouragement during this crucial period in their young lives."

The Michigan National Guard is a partner of Mentor Michigan, an initiative of Governor Jennifer

M. Granholm and First Gentleman Daniel G. Mulhern and administered through the Michigan

Community Service Commission.  The National Guard is joining Mentor Michigan in its efforts

to recruit 10,000 new mentors by 2010.

"This Lunch Buddy program creates an incredible opportunity for our students," said Gardner Middle School Principal Norm Gear.  "Mentoring provides multiple benefits to our youth, whether it's encouraging them to excel in their schoolwork, helping them make constructive life choices, or providing much valued support and guidance."

This kick-off occurred during Michigan Mentoring Month.  Governor Granholm designated January as Michigan Mentoring Month, a designation that coincided with the national celebration of mentoring month.  To find out more, visit www.mentormichigan.org.
