Michigan's AmeriCorps Site Supervisor of the Month

December 2009 Site Supervisor of the Month - Cherilynn Lampinen Cherilynn Lampinen is in her first year as a Site Supervisor for the Superior AmeriCorps program in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, but one would never know that by the exceptional job she's done to date.  Cherilynn supervises two AmeriCorps members who work with students one-on-one and in small groups in the Even Start program.  She ensures members are meeting Even Start program expectations and monitors to be sure their service activities are appropriate based on the AmeriCorps policies and procedures.

Cherilynn is employed by the BHK Child Development Board as Even Start Support and the Lead Adult Educator.  In addition to completing initial assessments and intakes, Cherilynn does all necessary tracking and evaluating for the program's local evaluations.  She is also contracted through the local Michigan Works office to track and teach students essentials to earn their GED.  Her job responsibilities are wide-ranging, but all work toward benefiting youth and families in the local community.

Cherilynn understands how important it is to have AmeriCorps members available for the students and is able to see the tremendous impact they have.  She provides constructive feedback and positive guidance, and has taught members how to recognize which strategies work best with students in various circumstances.  She is always responsive to their personal and professional needs and requests.  If a member has an issue with a co-worker, student, or family, she is willing to listen and help them find a solution.  She also keeps members informed about additional trainings and professional development opportunities, and encourages participation in AmeriCorps trainings and special events, like the Member Celebration and Signature Service Project.

In addition to her involvement with the Superior AmeriCorps Council, Cherilynn has also volunteered to present at all-member trainings.  According to program director, Stacy Crouch, "Cherilynn is a very effective and informative supervisor who is always thinking about what is best for Even Start, AmeriCorps, and the families they serve.  She's always looking at what can be improved upon and encourages those she works with to do so as well."
