Statement Regarding the Passage of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve Act

On March 31, the U.S. House of Representatives passed The Edward M. Kennedy Serve Act with a vote of 275-149.  This action demonstrates a renewed commitment and call for citizens to rebuild our nation's foundation through service.

The Michigan Community Service Commission applauds our Congressional leaders who, by their affirmative votes, recognized the pivotal role national service can play in resolving many of our nation's most serious challenges.

"It is clear that national service will be crucial in restoring the health and vitality of our communities," said Paula Kaiser Van Dam, Executive Director, Michigan Community Service Commission.  "And, we sincerely appreciate our Congressional leaders showing their support of service as a viable solution to help Americans take part in critical improvement efforts across our great State."

Through this legislation the number of AmeriCorps members will increase from 75,000 to 250,000 by the year 2017, creating increased opportunities for volunteers to participate in much needed efforts that focus on education, clean energy, veterans, economic opportunity, and other national priorities.  Additionally, age and income eligibility issues that once presented challenges to older Americans considering service will be addressed.  And, the tragic events of September 11 will not be forgotten as this day will be heralded as a day of national service.  Further, through the development and implementation of the Social Innovation Fund and other fiscal measures, nonprofits will receive valuable and skilled resources to help each of us complete many of the tasks that lie ahead.

Above all, it is important that each of us holds true to the understanding that the legacy of tomorrow's Americans is dependent on how swiftly and effectively we respond to significant issues today.
