On
Monday, May 11, 2009, Congressman Vernon J. Ehlers joined AmeriCorps members from the Cherry Street Health Corps in
Grand Rapids
to publicly announce his acceptance of the role as co-chair of the National Service Congressional Caucus.
Understandably, in his capacity as a public servant and as a citizen, he knows firsthand the significant impact national service makes on a daily basis in response to the increasing needs of challenged communities.
"As Michigan and the U.S. continues to face economic issues and mounting social needs, service will play a critical role in solving some of our most serious problems," said Paula Kaiser Van Dam, Executive Director, Michigan Community Service Commission. "This is such a pivotal time for national service. It is exciting to have Congressman Ehlers championing national service as a leader of the Caucus."
The National Service Congressional Caucus is a bipartisan group of legislators dedicated to raising awareness of national service and expanding service opportunities for all Americans. Congressman Ehlers will co-chair the Caucus with Rep. David Price of
North Carolina, Rep. Todd Platts of
Pennsylvania, and Rep. Doris Matsui of
California.
Others on hand to support Congressman Ehlers in his new role during this exciting time in service history was Cheryl Bremer, acting CEO of the Greater Grand Rapids American Red Cross, and Tony Campbell, Vice President-Community Investment, West Michigan United Way and Michigan Community Service Commission board member.
