About Michigan's AmeriCorps Member Council

2009-2010 Michigan's AmeriCorps Member Council

Mission Statement

The mission of Michigan's AmeriCorps Member Council is to strengthen the National Service movement and the awareness of AmeriCorps in Michigan through effective outreach, community-wide service projects, and civic engagement.

Member Council Description

Since 1999, the Member Council has been bringing members together from programs throughout the state.  Council members help spread the word about the great things AmeriCorps is doing in our communities.  The Council's existence is a direct result of interest and input from members around the state. The Member Council consists of AmeriCorps members from each of Michigan's AmeriCorps*State programs, as well as members from AmeriCorps*VISTA, and AmeriCorps*National Direct programs in Michigan.

The Michigan's AmeriCorps Member Council provides a statewide network in which Michigan's AmeriCorps Members share ideas, experiences, and a spirit of service while taking a leadership position in their AmeriCorps program.  Each Council representative plays a significant role in making AmeriCorps a household name by giving at least two AmeriCorps outreach presentations and organizing at least one local service project.  Representatives also assist in the development of a Michigan's AmeriCorps Member Newsletter and serve as liaisons between AmeriCorps members and the MCSC. In addition, representatives will have the chance to network with each other, build a forum for Corps member exchange, and develop relationships with other programs throughout the state.

Each program has the opportunity to select one member to serve as a representative on the Council. Skills to look for include: a person with good ideas, the ability to make those ideas happen, effective communication skills, and someone who participates well in group discussion. Although the Council does not require a significant amount of time, each Council representative must make the commitment to be present at each conference call and meeting.
