The Heart of West Michigan United Way, in partnership with Grand Rapids Public Schools and Literacy Center of West Michigan, is engaging 15 full-time AmeriCorps members at area elementary schools to improve the reading ability of children, increase the capacity of parents to support their children, and increase the capacity of parents to compete more effectively in the workplace. AmeriCorps members serving through the Schools of Hope program either assists in the in-school tutoring program, where students are paired with an adult to receive weekly tutoring in reading skills in order to increase their grades and MEAP scores in reading, or serve by providing weekly literacy enrichment activities for parents in order to help them better assist their children and reach their own educational and/or employment goals. All members will also serve in Schools of Hope after-school literacy programs. In order to reach the full potential of the program, members recruit community volunteers to pair with both children and parents during tutoring sessions.
