The Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District (Char-Em ISD) serves 11 school districts over a 2.5 county area in northern Lower Michigan. The Char-Em ISD AmeriCorps Program utilizes 10 full-time members to mentor 150 identified at-risk youth. The goal of the program is to increase student success and reduce physical and emotional violence within the school and community settings through a variety of practices. Referring teachers surveyed will report gains in student academic progress, attendance, and social behavior with 50% of mentored youth showing a decrease in disciplinary referrals. Members will also engage 250 non-AmeriCorps volunteers who will serve 750 hours in support of community and school specific projects.
