Elementary students from Pennfield Schools have spent significant time analyzing the nutritional content of the schools hot lunch program. While healthy options were available they found there are nearly 20 ways to serve breaded chicken.
After unsuccessfully petitioning the school to provide healthier options like a salad bar they decided to take matter into their own hands. Along with their teacher, they researched a list of healthy snacks they could introduce in their school. On Tuesdays, the team delivers a healthy snack to each classroom in the building. After serving things like "ants on a log", mini carrots, or unsweetened fruit juice, the students survey the recepients about their snack habit.
The students have rich data on the eating habits of the students and believe they have exposed the majority of students to healthy and tasty treats to which they were previously unfamiliar. This project is tighly alined to various content areas in the curriclum and helps promote healthy lifestyles in the building.
