Michigan Community Service Commission 2008 Biennial Report

Over the past few years, Michigan's communities have relied heavily on nonprofits and volunteers to provide essential services to citizens on a daily basis.

Although the 2008 biennial report will highlight the MCSC's efforts in greater detail, let us point out a few important facts.  For instance, in 2008, the MCSC granted more than $5.8 million in federal funds to local communities for volunteer initiatives.  As a result of this investment, more than $5.2 million in matching funds were leveraged and individuals earned more than $1.61 million toward their higher education costs.

This report spotlights all the MCSC's programs - Michigan's AmeriCorps, Learn and Serve-Michigan, Mentor Michigan, Michigan's Volunteer Investment Grants, and Governor's Service Awards.  Our efforts are evident in the experiences of volunteers, grantees, and the everyday people our programs reach.  In the last year:

  • Learn and Serve-Michigan students engaged in more than 500,000 hours of service-learning.
  • Michigan's AmeriCorps members recruited nearly 25, 000 volunteers who dedicated more than 165,000 hours to service.
  • Mentor Michigan supported nearly 230 mentoring programs that matched more than 22,000 Michigan youth with mentors.
  • Michigan's Volunteer Investment Grants helped leverage nonprofit services in 24 counties.

The information above reflects service performed by both individuals and groups to address challenges in literacy, homelessness, environmental concerns, and much more.  They mentored and tutored children and supported families, the elderly, and the larger community in countless ways.  We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to share our collective journey with you; a journey we trust will lead to a sustainable volunteer work ethic from every citizen, young and old.
