2017 Michigan's AmeriCorps Member Celebration: Lead With Your Best Self
To kick-off a new year of AmeriCorps service, more than 600 Michigan's AmeriCorps members will convene in Lansing on November 16 to participate in the 2017 Member Celebration. These members are dedicating a year of their lives to providing intensive, results-driven service in communities across Michigan and came together to celebrate their courage and commitment. The agenda can be viewed here.
AmeriCorps is a nation-wide, competitive grant program through which organizations can apply to host teams of individuals, called members, to provide service in nonprofits, public agencies, faith-based, and other community organizations. In the 2017-18 program year, nearly 1,000 AmeriCorps members in Michigan will serve in a variety of capacities, including providing financial literacy training, helping homeless individuals and families find permanent housing, organizing literacy and tutoring programs for underperforming youth, mentoring and supporting youth from disadvantaged circumstances, preserving our environment, building houses, feeding the hungry, recruiting volunteers, and more. In return for providing a year service, members receive a modest living stipend and an education award to be used towards college, vocational training programs, or student loans. The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) is the administering organization for Michigan's AmeriCorps programs, which it does with funds provided by the Corporation from National and Community Service (CNCS).
The Member Celebration helps members gain a new perspective on the impact their AmeriCorps service has throughout the state. During the event, members will participate in valuable training, networking, and teambuilding opportunities and enhance their professional development through workshops on leadership, volunteer recruitment, conflict resolution, and other topics relevant to national and community service. Additionally, members will have the privilege of hearing from leadership expert, Dan Mulhern. The Member Celebration will conclude with the AmeriCorps Pledge and a swearing-in ceremony that will help reaffirm members' commitment to AmeriCorps and national service.
