IMPACT is an early education program designed to mentor and support at-risk pre-school and kindergarten children in Wayne County, MI. Most of the six quarter-time and 41 minimum-time AmeriCorps members are recruited from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Henry Ford Community College and have the option of serving as a work-study student. Mentors who wish to volunteer without work-study are more than welcome to apply. AmeriCorps members serve in one of three initiatives: IMPACT Literacy, IMPACT Prevention, or IMPACT Health. IMPACT Literacy mentors are paired up one-on-one with a partner child, and focus on preparing their child for the next grade level. IMPACT Prevention corps members serve in multiple classrooms, implementing the My Body is Mine training to give children a voice against child abuse and neglect. IMPACT Health corps members also service in many classrooms, implementing mini sessions on healthy habits and activities. Once AmeriCorps members have completed at least 300 hours, they are eligible for a $1,000 AmeriCorps Education Award.
