The Service-Learning Youth Council (SLYC) is the Michigan Community Service Commission's youth advisory group.  SLYC (pronounced "slick") was created in 2002 to connect young people with our youth-focused grantmaking program, Learn and Serve - Michigan.  SLYC members work with the Learn and Serve team at the MCSC to further public support for service-learning in schools and communities across Michigan.

There are two required SLYC meetings per year.  At these meetings, members receive training on topics such as leadership, identifying stakeholders, public speaking, youth/adult partnerships, goal setting, time management, service project planning, and more.  These meetings prepare them for the SLYC requirements:

• Participate in one service project on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service,
• Assist in planning one state-wide Global Youth Service Day event, and
• Raise awareness about service-learning with a blog, video, presentation, or another form of outreach.

Members may also be asked to participate in Learn and Serve - Michigan grant reviews or provide feedback on service-learning issues.

Each Learn and Serve - Michigan school-based and community-based grantee is eligible to nominate one young person to serve on SLYC.  Members are in grades 7-12 and participate in an active Learn and Serve - Michigan program.
