Knowing how rabies is transmitted is highly useful information, but the first line of defense is prevention. While rabies in animals is 100% fatal, and fatal in humans once symptoms occur, there are measures you can take to protect your pets, children and yourself.
Have pets vaccinated and keep up with regular booster shots. Many people don’t realize that an unvaccinated animal that contracts rabies can’t be saved.
Consider vaccination of livestock, especially horses. Consult with your veterinarian.
Warn children to stay away from wild or stray animals, (this includes "cute & fuzzy" baby animals!)
Wildlife-proof your home:
eliminate sites on your house or property that can be used by animals for sleeping or raising young
cap all chimneys
plug holes in roofs, eaves, and sides of buildings
block entryways to foundations, under porches and steps
trim tree limbs that extend to or over your roof
provide bright exterior lighting to discourage nocturnal animals
