The commodity Procurement Branch of the Fruit and Vegetable Programs buys fresh and processed fruits and vegetables for domestic assistance programs. In addition to supplying people with nutritious food items, these services remove surplus production from the marketplace. This surplus removal service assists U.S. farmers when they face poor market conditions due to excess supply.
USDA often specifies that the foods are low in fat, sugar and sodium. Also, it is USDA policy to purchase only products grown and processed in the United States. In almost all cases, competitive bids are received by the Commodity Procurement Branch, and contracts are awarded to the low bidders.
