The Michigan Food Safety Alliance was formed in 1997 after Michigan experienced several major foodborne illness outbreaks. It coincided with a food safety awareness campaign sponsored by Senator Spencer Abraham and the opening of Michigan State University's National Food Safety and Toxicology Center. The Alliance is an MDA-led roundtable that brings together Michigan's food safety partners to share information and discuss major public policy issues related to improving and maintaining a safe food supply for Michigan citizens. The Alliance attempts to be forward-looking and prepare the state's regulatory, regulated and academic communities for a continually evolving food system. Consumer awareness is also an important focus of Alliance members. Issues targeted have included Bovine Tuberculosis, irradiation, the Michigan Food Law of 2000 and others. Alliance partners include industry, university and consumer representatives, state and federal agencies, legislators, commodity organizations, etc.
Food Safety Alliance meetings are held quarterly at Michigan State University, Food Safety & Toxicology Center.
