What products need to be registered?

Michigan law requires that all products which make a pesticidal claim must be registered with the state.  The state defines a pesticide as "a substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, repelling or mitigating pests or intended as a plant regulator, defoliant, or desiccant."  A pest is defined as "an insect, rodent, nematode, fungus, weed and other forms of terrestrial or aquatic plant or animal life or virus, bacteria, or other microorganism, except viruses, fungi, bacteria, nematodes or other microorganisms in or on living animals."

What are the fees for registering a pesticide in Michigan?

The fees consist of registration and groundwater protection.
Registration fees are $40 per product
Groundwater Protection Fees are $100 per product for specialty products and $150 per product for non-specialty products.

What is considered a specialty product?

See website for specialty product details.

What is considered a non-specialty product?

See website non-specialty product details.

What is the Michigan's registration year?

July 1st thru June 30th

How long does it take to get approval on a new product?

From the time it received in our building, it first goes to mail room, then to finance, and then comes to the pesticide registration desk.  The average turn around is approximately 7-10 days.

How long do I have to wait until I receive my certificate of registration?

Certificates are run and mailed only once a week usually on Mondays.

Why doesn't the database on line show my product is registered in Michigan?

This database is only updated once a month.  If you don't see a product registered then please call Tammy Martin at 517-373-9750 to verify if actually registered after the last download.

Do 25b products need to be registered in Michigan?

Yes.  See website for 25b product details.

What is discontinuance?

Every product needs to go through a mandatory 2 year discontinuance period or the product needs to be recalled statewide.  Once a product is no longer being shipped, advertised, distributed then at this time the product can be put in 1st year of discontinuance.  The reason for this 2 year of discontinuance is to get the product out of the channels of trade.

Do I need to send labels with registration?

Yes.  All new product registrations and renewals require a marketplace label to be added to the package.  Without a label the product can't be registered.
