Cut Flowers and Flowering Plants

Michigan's Floriculture Industry - Cut Flowers and Flowering Plants

What better way to celebrate the summer months than by purchasing some Michigan flowers for your home or office? Michigan's many varieties of summer flowers cater to every personal preference. The flowers are not only beautiful to look at, they smell great and add an extra touch of ambiance to any room or garden.

Many people are surprised to learn that Michigan is the nation's leading producer of geraniums, potted hosta, and marigold flats, and the second leading producer of pansy/viola hanging baskets and petunia hanging baskets. Michigan’s number one cut flower is the gladiolus with 33.9 million spikes sold annually, valued at $6.3 million.

Kalamazoo County is the country's largest seasonal grower of bedding plants, and is ranked in the top five counties nationally for bedding plant production. Ottawa, Kent, Muskegon and Monroe counties are other large floriculture-producing counties in the state.

The wholesale value of all Michigan floriculture products was $300.7 million in 2000, up 30% from the previous year. The most lucrative floriculture market is annual bedding and garden plants, which account for $148 million in sales.

Michigan is the third most successful floriculture producer in the nation, only surpassed by Florida and California. Our state's many varieties of cut flowers, potted plants, and bedding plants are sure to please!
