Michigan Department of
Agriculture Director Mitch Irwin announced today the opening of
mid-Michigan’s first ash disposal site to aid homeowners and communities
impacted by the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), an exotic insect responsible for the
death of millions of the state’s ash trees.
“Safe disposal of
infested ash material is key to preventing the insect from spreading to other
areas of the state,” said Irwin. “This mid-Michigan site offers
residents a low-cost opportunity to properly dispose of their ash trees destroyed
by EAB.”
The Lansing disposal site
is located at 8740 Davis Hwy., in Lansing, and operates Monday through Friday,
8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hours are subject to change.
Please visit the MDA Web site at www.michigan.gov/eab
for the most current information on fees and hours of operation.
Ash trees and materials
(limbs, logs, chips, etc.) will be accepted from municipalities, property owners
and private contractors for a minimal fee. Companies or individuals must be
able to deliver the materials to the disposal yard and offload it.
“Utilizing this low-cost
disposal option is a positive step toward containing EAB in Michigan,”
said Patricia Lockwood, EAB policy director for Governor Jennifer M. Granholm.
“It’s imperative that Michigan residents continue to support the
EAB response efforts by properly disposing of ash materials and not transporting
hardwood firewood.”
