LANSING - Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) Director Mitch Irwin today announced that the state’s annual agricultural exports inched out Kentucky for the 19th spot among the top 20 state agriculture exporters, which represent 77 percent of the nation’s agricultural exports.

According to a recent USDA Agricultural Trade Update report, Michigan’s agricultural exports generated more than $1 billion and supported nearly 13,000 jobs. Exports are critical to the state’s $60.1 billion a year industry with the state exporting about one-third of its 200 agricultural commodities each year.

“This report showcases Michigan’s diverse and high-quality agricultural products and proves we are succeeding in the global marketplace,” said Irwin. “Safeguarding and expanding international markets for Michigan products are critical to growing our second largest industry and diversifying the state’s economy.”

Michigan's top five agricultural exports in 2006 were:

  • Soybeans & Products - $233 million
  • Feed & Grains - $216.6 million
  • Vegetables - $114.3 million
  • Fruit - $97.6 million
  • Dairy - $70.9 million

“Through MDA’s International Marketing program, the state not only has been able to maintain its top three export markets, but is looking to grow and expand to other areas,” said Irwin. “We are currently exploring emerging markets in Central America, Africa, India, China and elsewhere to increase Michigan’s visibility in the international arena.”
