Detroit, Mich - Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) Director Don Koivisto is encouraging top bids for prize livestock raised by 4-H and FFA members that will be placed on the auction block during the annual Youth Livestock Auction on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at the Michigan State Fair in Detroit.
"The Michigan State Fair livestock auction is a wonderful opportunity for young producers of these premium animals to raise funds for college and other needs, as well as generate a tremendous sense of accomplishment and pride in their hard work," said Koivisto.
The auction takes place immediately following the fair’s annual Governor’s Reception, which is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. The event features steers, hogs, lambs, and goats; including those receiving “Grand Champion” and “Reserve Grand Champion” honors. In addition, attendees may bid on the “Best of Class” Michigan wines, “Grand Champion” cheese, “Best” butter, and “Champion” gallon of milk.
Buyers of the “Grand Champion” and “Reserve Grand Champion” animals have an opportunity to have their names prominently displayed for more than 250,000 visitors to view throughout the Michigan State Fair. Additionally, Paul W. Smith, News/Talk 760 WJR morning host, will serve as celebrity auctioneer at the Youth Auction.
The 2007 top bidders include: Kroger Co., purchased the Grand Champion market steer exhibited by Jordan Wilczynski of Columbus for $17,000; and the Grand Champion market lamb exhibited by Hannah Biniecki of Monroe for $19,000; Meijer, Inc., purchased the Grand Champion market hog exhibited by Taylor Copes of New Lothrop for $14,000; and Boyer’s Meat Processing purchased the Grand Champion market goat exhibited by Jillon Hunt of East Leroy for $4,000.
